Battling For Billions, Larry Ellison and Marc Benioff Each Claim Cloud Supremacy–Who’s Right?

CLOUD WARS — The flamboyant leaders of two of the world’s most-powerful cloud-computing companies have each begun proclaiming cloud supremacy by virtue of being #1 in the biggest category for enterprise applications in the cloud—but the problem is, Larry Ellison and Marc Benioff each say that very a different market segment is the biggest and the best.

So who’s telling the truth, and who’s stretching it?

Here’s the rub: large and midsized companies mostly use three types of enterprise apps to run their businesses: ERP, which focuses internally and automates finance, supply chain, procurement and planning; CRM, which focuses externally and automates marketing, sales, commerce and service; and HCM, which runs HR processes from recruitment to retirement.

Oracle founder and chairman Larry Ellison has said on multiple occasions over the past two years that because ERP is by far the largest of those three segments, the SaaS company that rules cloud ERP will become the dominant cloud-applications provider.

And that company, Ellison has emphatically stated, is Oracle—and in the realm of cloud ERP, Gartner agrees wholeheartedly.
